Last year was kind of mixed for me. I got a lot done, was able to travel more, enjoyed not having a fixed schedule, and had very little stress.

But at the same time my health deteriorated and I found myself very distracted online. In particular, my smartphone use became problematic.

I started playing a ‘free to play’ game on my phone that is basically unlimited and requires tens of thousands of hours of grinding to play. I also often ended up in an email->twitter->facebook->instagram->linkedin->email endless loop. The combination of the two meant that over time I ended up reaching for my phone whenever I had a free moment, and spending a lot of low quality time on it.

No more.

Yesterday I deleted the game and all social media apps. Immediately my phone became much less interesting. It basically only has email on there now, so there is nowhere to loop to after checking that there is no new email 🙂

I already feel better, although I still find myself pulling the phone out for no reason.

Did a lot more reading yesterday too on my Kindle.

Something I should have done a while ago.

  1. The degree to which ‘check your phone’ is a reflex action is a problem. Between any actions, you gotta check your phone. Wake up, check, eat, check, shower, check, get to a place, check, toilet, check, etc etc

    I’m better now than a few years ago, but it’s still out of hand and I’m skimming off a lot of reflective, peaceful minutes from every hour.

    1. Sounds very similar to me. I am working on leaving it in a different room to charge when I get home and only picking it up again when I leave. Baby steps!

  2. I invested in an alarm clock recently. I leave my phone charging in a different room (downstairs), and this way, I don’t pick up my phone first thing in the morning. It is more relaxing.

    I recommend the book スマホ脳 (this is the Japanese translation of a book by a Swedish writer).

  3. Did I read this here? Generally, to paraphrase:

    “…do less, but do what you do better.”

    Or, you could pursue something like #11.

  4. Re #3: You can get good emergency backpacks and dry plastic toilet bags via Furusato Nozei donations!

  5. We bought a ready-prepared disaster backpack from a recent charity start-up called “Think the Day” (sic). The good thing about it is, all proceeds apparently go to the latest earthquake relief fund. I’m quite impressed with the quality of the contents of the bag.

  6. For your smartphone habits I’d recommend (if you haven’t read it yet) the book Digital Minimalism. No need to go to the minimalism side of things but it will help you review the smartphone habits.
