I will teach you to be financially secure

I started RetireJapan in 2013 to help people living in Japan learn about personal finance, investing, and retirement.

Last year we finally launched something I have been wanting to do for a long time: a live course over multiple sessions giving people the chance not just to get information but to put it in practice and get encouragement and support as they do so.

We called it ‘Your First Ten Million Yen’.

The idea behind the course is to take people who are not currently saving and investing, and help them take action and build habits that will allow them to get to ten million yen in savings and investments.

Ten million yen is a significant amount of money, but it should be possible for most people to get there. Getting there will probably also be lifechanging for most people.

Accumulating your first ten million yen will make it much easier to get the second, or third ten million, and should put you in a position of financial strength and stability.

Life is so much better when you no longer have to worry about money.

Who is the course for?

Your First Ten Million Yen is aimed at people who are living in Japan and who do not yet have a solid grasp of personal finance and a regular saving/investing habit.

If you are already saving and investing every month you don’t really need this course.

If you are a US citizen you don’t really have access to the investment options in Japan, so the course may not be a good fit for you. Please get in touch if you’d like to discuss it.

What does the course entail?

The course is a mixture of 5 live sessions (held on Zoom once every two weeks) and supplementary resources (videos, articles and spreadsheets) for self-study. We send out recordings of the live sessions too so that people who missed them can catch up, and everyone can review the information if they need to.

What is in the course?

You can check the course page for more details, but we cover basic personal finance, investing, NISA, iDeCo, nenkin, insurance, buying/renting a home, tax, and much much more.

How much does it cost and how do I sign up?

Cohort 2 costs 20,000 yen for the full course including the live sessions, recordings, and materials (future cohorts are likely to be more expensive). You can sign up via the course page here.

This is likely to be the only cohort this year, so if you are interested in taking the course you might want to join this cohort as the next one will probably be held in 2024.

  1. Hi Ben,

I have been following your work on LinkedIn for some time now and I am impressed by your knowledge and experience in the field of investing in Japan. I am particularly interested in attending your course as it aligns with my own interests and aspirations.

I am a citizen of Zimbabwe, and while I am not currently a Permanent Resident of Japan or a US citizen, however I am planning on applying for Japanese PR/Citizenship in the future. I am fully committed to building a future in Japan and would greatly benefit from the insights and guidance provided by your course.

I understand that your course may be primarily aimed at US citizens, but I would like to inquire if my background and interests would make me a good candidate for the course. I am eager to learn from experts in the field like yourself and would greatly appreciate any consideration.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    1. Thanks for the kind words, and your interest in the course!

Actually, the course is not a good fit for US citizens because they face limitation on investing in Japan. It is a good fit for anyone else who is planning to live in Japan for the medium- to long-term.

It sounds like it might be a good fit for you. Please take a look at the course page here and check out the contents: https://retirejapan.gumroad.com/l/YFTMY2

Do let me know if you have any questions!
