Your First Ten Million Yen

UPDATE: We are now sold out. Thanks for your interest, everyone!

If you are still interested in the course, please sign up for our waiting list here. We’ll announce if any places become available, and details of future courses before they are publicly announced.

The next step in the RetireJapan plan for world domination is to launch our online courses. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time.

I’ve done hundreds of coaching sessions over the last few years, and most of them featured the same questions:

Many people reach a point where they start thinking about the future. It’s like a switch is flipped. Maybe they settle down with a partner, have a child, realise they are likely to be in Japan for the long term, or just feel like it is time to get their finances in order.

I want to help people get to grips with these questions. For many people, getting their finances in order will transform their lives.

Hundreds have already gotten started through RetireJapan, but it is time to take the next step.

Eventually we’ll be running a number of courses, both video self-study ones and live cohorts, but our first course is going to be a live one.

We will be running the first cohort of Your First Ten Million Yen from September. Please click on the link to see more details. This first course will be limited to just twenty participants, although if you want to take the course with a family member or friend that is fine too.

If you have any questions please post them in the comments below, or get in touch via Gumroad, the forum, or Twitter.

  1. Hello Ben,

I would like to join the course but require another 24 hours to pay and officially join. Is it possible you could reserve a spot until then?

Thank you for your time with this request.

    1. Hi Scott
We’re just going to take bookings in order so can’t really hold spots. But I’m guessing it won’t fill up until The Monday Read email goes out, so you should be good 😃

We’ll also be doing another cohort from January if you miss this one.

  2. Does this course apply to only those living in Japan currently? My desire is to return to Japan permanently.

    1. Hi Deborah
I would say 80% of the course is general personal finance principles, and the other 20% is Japan-specific. There is no rush though, we will be running this course again in the future ^-^

  3. So I’m interested in the course. But have American citizenship. How much of the course will I be able /not able to use?

    1. Hi Catrina
I would say 20% of the course is Japan-specific, and maybe 3/4 of that excludes Americans (due to US tax laws/rules). A bit more detail here: https://www.retirejapan.com/us-citizens-and-green-card-holders/

If in doubt I would hold off. We’re planning a guide for Americans in Japan, and future courses may be able to have a US citizen module to replace the Japanese stuff they can’t use. Stay tuned!

    1. Hi Genevieve

Thanks for commenting. You can see more details about the course here: https://retirejapan.gumroad.com/l/YourFirstTenMillionYen

If you are not in Japan then approximately 20% of the course will not be of use for you. I would say you can probably find something in Singapore that might be a better fit, although if you do choose to take our course you will be most welcome ^-^

      1. Hi Genevieve, I just realised I may have misunderstood your comment! I’m very sorry (and slow sometimes).

If you are living in Japan then the entire course will be relevant.

  4. Hi Ben, my (Japanese) wife and I live in London at the moment but plan to move back to Japan in the future, almost certainly for good. We have a house there, mostly paid off now. I’d like to join your course but I suspect it won’t work for me if it’s live – firstly there’s the time difference, secondly my working hours here are kind of all over the place. Any idea how long it might be before you get a course going that I could work through at my own pace?

    1. Hi Hugh
That is a great question. This first cohort is an experiment, and based on what we learn from running it we’ll do future cohorts, video courses, etc. The next session is likely to be early 2023.
This time though it could work for you: the sessions are at 20:00 on Sunday evening, which is going to be midday-ish Sunday in the UK 😉
Also, if you miss a session we’ll send you the recording from the zoom call, you’ll get all the supplementary self-study materials and will be able to send in questions, etc. so that might be an option too.

    1. Hi Felix
      I would prefer that too!
Unfortunately Gumroad does not offer JPY pricing yet.
We’ll definitely take currency options into account when looking at alternative platforms in the future ^-^
