The closest thing I have to a superpower

Picture

I’ve written before that becoming competent at personal finance is a little like gaining a superpower. It can completely change your life.

Personal finance is a multiplier. It allows you to spend more time with your family, to do better work, to be less stressed, to be more hopeful about the future.

Ten years ago I was pretty hopeless with money. I had no mental frameworks, I had bad habits, I had no savings, and I had no goals. Unsurprisingly, I didn’t make much progress.

Today I am in a better place. I have goals, I know what to do to get closer to them, and life is pretty good. I can’t believe how far I’ve come.

The funny thing is that I’m not even particularly good at this stuff.

A quick glance at the RetireJapan Forum will show that there are lots of people who are better investors, more careful budgeters, better informed, or better earners.

What I do have is a burning drive to share this with people. I am a personal finance evangelist. I talk about this to pretty much everyone I meet, whether they are interested or not. It means I don’t get invited to many parties 😉

My goal is to help everyone who needs it to get started on the path to financial stability and freedom.

Knowledge is power. Habits create reality. Money grants freedom.

Next month I’ll be running the first RetireJapan online course. We’ll meet once a week for four weeks and work together to go over the basic principles of personal finance, take a look at your situation, make a plan, and get started building the habits of success. I think it’s going to help anyone who joins it a lot.

This course is for beginners. It’s for people who are starting to get worried about the future. It’s for people who want to invest in their future but don’t know how. It might be for you.

If you’re looking for a push to get started, or if you have friends who might benefit, please check out the course or share this post. I’d love to see you there on January 7th.

    1. Hi Matthew
Unfortunately we didn’t get enough people signing up this time to be able to run the course. I guess we got something wrong (price, timing, format, content?).
I still believe something like this could help a lot of people, so I’m going to go away and think about it and try again. Stay tuned for announcements about the next iteration 🙂
