It’s on, not sure how long for

Amazon is doing a sale on Kindles for Prime members: it’s 4,000 yen off a Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, or Oasis. Not sure when it will end, so if you are interested recommend checking it out sooner rather than later.

I got into ebooks on Kindle a long time ago, but I have always read them on my phone. I got one of the first Kindle ereaders a long time ago, and really didn’t like it: the slow page refresh bothered me. I found reading on a smartphone much better, despite the screen making my eyes tired after a while.

Last year I got a basic Kindle, and although it was a big improvement on the one I had before, it still felt cheap and the screen seemed dull. Better but still not as good as a smartphone.

Then this year I have noticed my attention span is shot. Reading books on a smartphone only lasts a few minutes, then I’m off on some terrible Facebook->Gmail->Guardian->Reddit->Quora loop.

Mainly because of this, this year I have read far fewer books than I usually do. Something needs to be done. Last week I noticed Amazon’s latest sale for Prime members (they seem to be doing this almost constantly now) and decided to try a Kindle Paperwhite, as I hoped it would be better than the basic Kindle and I didn’t want to spend the full whack on the top-of-the-line Oasis.

I’m really glad I did. I love the Paperwhite. It is backlit, which makes a big difference. You can read it in a dark room, or in sunlight. It is made of a rubbery material that feels much better than the cheap and plastic-y basic Kindle. It’s the first Kindle I’ve tried that I like to read with.

However, I find I can only enjoy relatively lightweight ebooks, but not more difficult ones. Novels or light non-fiction is fine, anything academic or difficult I find easier to read on paper.

How about you? Any Kindle fans? Is the Oasis worth the money?

  1. I love my paperwhite, but with the waterproofing added to the new oasis I am kid of tempted … but the price … Also, if you want the 3g version, I would suggest buying it from amazon us. The us version is global 3g, the version sold in Japan states that the 3g can only be used in Japan.

  2. I was a big fan of the free book which you could choose each month from Prime unlimited if you were a prime member. Last month they changed their policy and now you can only get book from the reading library. As there is only English 178 books to choose from and most of these are travel guides, I was really annoyed. To protect I cancelled my prime membership.
